Artificial insemination always reminds me of when I worked one summer in the Crazy Mountains in Montana at the Marlboro Ranch. It was a disappointing job where I signed up for back country catering for a Phillip Morris rewards trip facilitator but instead spent the summer washing dishes and cutting vegetables in a rural high school kitchen. The Marlboro Ranch in addition to a complete old fashioned, old timey western town was also a working cattle ranch. The area where the dirty deeds where done was lovingly called the “insemination station.”
But in this case, we were headed to the Georgetown FD Auction when we noticed the female flower blooming in the morning rain. I grabbed 3 male staimens and hand pollinated the blossom and closed it up with a handy twistie tie.
Now the fun begins. Grow pumpkin, grow!
